Hall of Honour
In 2013 the Byron Bay FC Hall of Honour was established as the highest recognition of contributions to the club.
For the exceptional individuals inducted into the Hall of Honour, Byron Bay FC has been a central part of their lives and in many ways the award also goes to their families who supported them. The two western grandstands are named after the two inductees.
Peter Keenan is the inaugural Byron Bay FC Hall Of Honour inductee.
Peter joined the Club in 1979 and for 34 years worked tirelessly doing every job that is possible. Peter started played seniors in his first year with the club and it was his persistence and passion in the early 1980s that saved the senior club from folding.
He been Club President four times and has held so many positions on the committee member that he cannot remember them all. He has just always been there.
Peter played several Premier Division Grand Finals and over the years worked his way down the grades until his final championship came in 2011 as he was part of the team that won the Men’s Division 6 Pointscore Championship.
A bad injury sustained while playing Division 5 in 2013 forced his fifth – and final – retirement but his service to the club did not stop. Retirement from playing simply meant Peter handed in his jersey and began his new career as Division 5 assistant manager alongside his great mate Kenny Baynes.
Over the years Peter was also been Premier Reserves coach, Premier Division manager, a junior coach, canteen coordinator and field coordinator.
Keenen Electrical has sponsored the club on countless occasions, as did his parents beforehand. Peter is first person to put his hand in his pocket to fund the club [or a player in need] and the first person to put his hand up to do a job.
The club was delighted to see Peter awarded the Bill Turner Award for Outstanding Contribution to Football in Northern NSW and is very proud that Peter is the inaugural member of the club’s Hall of Honour.
At the time of his induction, Vlad had been with Byron Bay FC for 25 years.
One of the most passionate men you will ever meet, Vlad played with great success and made a successful transition to coaching. He coached the Premier Division side on three occasions and coached other senior and junior teams six times. Perhaps the most notable being when he guided the U16 Boys to the treble as winners of the Pointscore Championship, Grand Final and ANZAC Cup.
Vlad was the Brunswick Valley District Junior Development Squad Coach, has been a FFNC representative coach twice, a Northern Brand coach twice, and took the U15s to the Country Championships.
Vlad also organised holiday coaching clinics in Lismore, Alstonville, Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads. He was an inaugural member of the coaches association and its treasurer. He worked very hard to secure Graham Bird as Byron Bay’s first professional coach.
As a player, Vlad has been captain coach of the Premier Division side and was an ANZAC Cup finalist. In 1996 and 1997 he played Division 2 with his son Todd, which is still one of his fondest memories. He hung up the boots after winning the Division 6 Pointscore Championship in 2011.
In his spare time Vlad has been Club President four times and held various other positions, including manager of the Premier Division team. He is of course a life member.
Awards of Distinction
The Awards of Distinction are for people who have made significant and lasting contribution to Byron Bay FC.
No one gives the club more than Kerry. At the time of this award, Kerry had run the juniors for the previous five years and has also been Treasurer. She has been instrumental in raising the quality of coaching for juniors and if there is a chance to give the juniors more coaching, more opportunity, more gear or more encouragement then Kerry is up for it.
Charlie was Junior President and was instrumental in amalgamating the seniors and juniors in 1986. This move was critical in saving the seniors set them up to be promoted to Premier Division in 1990.
Tony was Club President on numerous occasions and has held various committee positions along with coaching and playing.
Peter coached at Byron Bay FC with distinction for many years including six seasons at the helm of the Premier Division squad. Peter oversaw the club’s first Grand Final Championship in 2005 and first Pointscore Championship in 2006. He was won an ANZAC Cup as coach in 2007.
Graham was our first professional coach. It’s said Mark Stewart moved training from the pub to the Rec Grounds and Graham continued the growth by turned the side into a proper squad. In the first year with the team he avoided relegation and in the next season he took them to the grand final. Graham was named Football Far North Coast Coach of the Year in 2002.
In the early years people didn’t always have a designate role, they just did what was asked and no-one embodied this more than Joyce. She was a team manager, ran the canteen and was ground coordinator. Living across the road from the Byron Bay Memorial Recreation Grounds made Joyce the go to person and she was still custodian of the key to the lights up to 2005.
One of the founding fathers in 1970 who took on coaching and managing teams – and every other job that was going – when Byron Bay FC was getting established, Darryl played a major role in instigating the Summerland Soccer Association.
Chris coached at Byron Bay FC for 18 consecutive years from 1988 and returned again in 2012 after a small break. He has taken five teams to Grand Finals, winning three.
Debby started as a supporter of the Club in the late 1970's to support her mates who were playing and remains one of our most dedicated supporters. But that’s not all: Debby has also been a coach, a committee member, has run the canteen, been the hardest working fundraiser in the club’s history and a tireless event organiser.
Family Awards
Families are the heart and soul of Byron Bay FC and every weekend the club helps creates life long memories for over 300 families. Of course, there are a few families that give more and the club strives to recognise their contributions.

Mark, Scott and Sean all played in the 1970s U8 Penguins original junior team.
Team of Distinction
To celebrate Byron Bay FC’s 50th anniversary, the club announced a Team of Distinction which encapsulated the best players of the club’s first half century.
The criteria used to select the 16 players included that they played with distinction for many years and showed outstanding skill or leadership. All the players contributed to great moments in our history or to our success. They are remembered for the quantity and quality of their on-field contribution.
All players were nominated by current or previous club members following a lengthy nomination period. The selection panel included the Club President Richard Ray, life members Kenny Baynes and Stuart Caruth as well as Paul Johnstone. The team was not selected based on positions, but simply the 16 most worthy players.

Mark began his Byron Bay career as an U8 Penguin in 1970. He went on to represent the Summerland Soccer Federation seven times and in 1973 was a member of the club’s first undefeated team, winning the Pointscore Championship and Grand Final.
