Local roots to a lasting legacy
Founded in 1963, Byron Bay Football Club has grown from a small local side into one of the Northern Rivers’ most active community clubs.
On the shoulders of giants
Built by volunteers, families, and generations of players, BBFC’s story is about participation first, pride in the jersey, and football as a shared community experience.
While the club has evolved with the game, its core values remain unchanged: community, inclusivity, and a love for the beautiful game.

Humble Beginnings
Byron Bay FC was founded in 1963, fielding junior teams from Under 7s to Under 14s in the Brunswick–Byron competition. The club added a senior men’s side in 1966, competing in the Tweed–Byron competition and steadily establishing itself in the region.

Early Success & Senior Foundations
The club claimed its first major silverware in 1978, winning the Tweed–Byron competition and reaching three consecutive Grand Finals. Between 1978 and 1980, Byron also secured three straight ANZAC Cups.
After entering the Lismore football scene via the Tristram Cup, Byron joined the Lismore District Soccer Football Association in 1982. Persistence paid off in 1988 when the Reserve Grade side won the Pointscore Championship under coach Mark Stewart, earning promotion to First Division.

The Rise of Women’s Football
Women’s football officially became part of Byron Bay FC in 1997, with the team entering Division 3 of the Lismore competition. Early success followed quickly, including a Grand Final appearance and a Division 2 Pointscore Championship the following season.
In 2000, the women’s team made history by becoming the club’s first side to win a major Football Far North Coast title, capturing the Callan McMillan Shield. The men followed with their first ANZAC Cup win in 2003.

A Defining Era for the Club
From the mid-2000s onward, Byron Bay FC enjoyed sustained success across multiple competitions. The Men’s Premier Division won its first Cyril Mayo Cup in 2005 and its first Pointscore Championship in 2006.
The club also became a powerhouse in youth football, winning its first Summer Youth League title in 2010 and going on to claim a record five titles by 2018.
In 2017, Byron Bay FC etched its name into history by becoming only the fifth club, and the first outside Lismore, to win the treble: the Men’s Premier Division Pointscore Championship, Grand Final, and ANZAC Cup.

Growth & the Modern Era
Since 2018, Byron Bay FC has focused on strengthening its foundations while continuing to grow across all levels of the game. Youth development remains central to the club, with clear pathways from MiniRoos through to senior football.
Women’s and girls’ participation has expanded significantly, reflecting both the growth of the game and the club’s commitment to inclusive football opportunities.
Off the field, ongoing improvements to facilities, the clubhouse, and club operations have supported a growing player base and strengthened BBFC’s role as a leading community club in the Northern Rivers.
