Working With Children Policy

SAFE . RESPECTFUL . COMPLIANT

Committed to child safety

Byron Bay Football Club is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and positive environment for all children and young people involved in our club. The welfare and wellbeing of children is our highest priority

This policy applies to all:

  • Coaches
  • Team managers
  • Volunteers
  • Committee members
  • Officials
  • Contractors and service providers
  • Anyone working with or around children at BBFC activities

It covers all club environments including training, matches, events, travel and online interactions.

Any person in a role that involves working with children must:

  • Hold a valid NSW Working With Children Check (WWCC)
  • Provide their WWCC number to the club before commencing their role
  • Keep their WWCC current for the duration of their involvement

BBFC verifies WWCC numbers in accordance with NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian requirements.

Roles requiring a WWCC include, but are not limited to:

  • Coaches and assistant coaches
  • Team managers
  • SAP staff
  • Regular volunteers working directly with children
  • Anyone in a position of authority or supervision

Parents assisting occasionally (for example, helping at a one-off training session) may not require a WWCC but must be supervised by a WWCC-cleared adult.

All adults involved with BBFC must:

  • Treat children with respect and dignity
  • Act within professional boundaries
  • Use appropriate language and behaviour at all times
  • Avoid being alone with a child where possible
  • Follow club policies and competition rules

Any form of abuse, discrimination, harassment or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated.

Adults working with children must:

  • Follow the BBFC Photo & Media Policy
  • Avoid private or inappropriate online communication with children
  • Use official club channels where communication is required

Any concerns regarding the safety or wellbeing of a child must be:

  • Taken seriously
  • Reported promptly to a club official or committee member or via email - info@byronbay.com.au

Where required, matters will be referred to:

  • NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian
  • Police or relevant authorities

BBFC supports a culture of reporting and will not tolerate retaliation against anyone who raises a concern in good faith.

Breaches of this policy may result in:

  • Removal from a role or activity
  • Disciplinary action
  • Reporting to external authorities where required
