Selection & Grading

CLEAR . FAIR . CONSISTENT

Fair. Transparent. Player-focused.

This policy explains how players are assessed, graded and placed into teams at Byron Bay Football Club. Our aim is to provide a fair, transparent and development-focused process for all players.

All selection and grading decisions at BBFC are guided by:

  • Player enjoyment, development and wellbeing
  • Age- and stage-appropriate challenge
  • Team balance, safety and sustainability
  • Long-term participation over short-term results

Decisions are made in the best interests of both individual players and the wider club environment.

This Selection & Grading Policy applies to all BBFC playing groups:

  • MiniRoos
  • Youth (graded junior teams)
  • Women’s football
  • Men’s football
  • Skills Acquisition Program (SAP)

While selection processes vary by age and competition, the same principles of fairness, transparency and respect apply across the club.

Team organisation

MiniRoos football focuses on participation, enjoyment and skill development rather than formal grading.

Once registrations close (typically late February), the club allocates MiniRoos players into teams. While reasonable efforts are made to place players with friends, not all requests can be guaranteed.

As a volunteer-run club, each team must have a coach and a manager. Parent involvement in these roles is essential for teams to be formed.

A MiniRoos Muster Day is March 21st, where players are advised of their teams and team organisation is confirmed. All player fees must be paid by the Muster Day for a player to be allocated to a team.

Team and friend requests

Team or friend requests may be submitted via the MiniRoos Team Request Form. Requests are considered where possible; however, final team allocations are made at the club’s discretion to ensure balanced teams and positive experiences for all players.

Assessment process

Youth players may be assessed through:

  • Pre-season trials or grading sessions
  • Training observations
  • Match play where applicable
  • Coach and selector input

Assessment considers a combination of:

  • Technical ability
  • Game understanding
  • Physical readiness
  • Attitude, effort and coachability

No single session determines a player’s placement.

Team placement and review

Team placements may be reviewed during the early part of the season to support player safety, development and team balance. Once teams are settled, movement is limited to provide stability.

Selection decisions are made by:

  • Appointed coaches
  • Club-approved selectors
  • Technical or SAP leads where relevant

Decisions are made collectively where possible to reduce bias and ensure consistency.

Due to the number of players involved:

  • Individual feedback may be limited
  • Selection decisions are not negotiable

Respectful questions are welcome. Repeated, confrontational or pressuring behaviour toward coaches or selectors will not be tolerated.

We ask families and players to:

  • Trust the selection process
  • Support all teams and players
  • Model respectful behaviour on and off the field

Selection decisions are never personal. They are made to create the best possible football experience for everyone.

This policy operates alongside:

  • BBFC Code of Conduct
  • FFNC competition rules
  • Child safety and wellbeing standards
